Albert Einstein, The World as I See It.

 

 

When we survey our lives and endeavours, wesoon observe that almost the whole of our actions and desires are bound up with the existence of other human beings. We see that our whole nature resembles that of the social animals. 

 

We eat food that others have grown, wear clothes that others have made, live in houses that others have built. The greater part of our knowledge and beliefs has been communicated to us by other people through the medium of a language which others have created.  We have, therefore, to admit that we owe our principal advantage over the beasts to the fact of living in human society.

 

 

 

 

The individual, if left alone freom birth, would remain primitive and beast-like in his thoughts and feelings to a degree that we can hardly conceive. The individual is what he is and has the significance that he has, not so much in virtue of his individuality, but rather as a member of a great human society, which directs his material and spiritual existence from the cradle to the grave. A man's value to the community depends primarily on how far his feelings, thoughts, and actions are directed towards promoting the good of his fellows.

 

 

 

우리의 생활과 노력을 돌이켜보면 우리의 거의 모든 행동과 다른 사람들의 존재와 밀접하게 얽혀 있다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 우리 인간의 본성이 모든 점에서 사회적 동물들의 본성과 닮았다는 것을 우리는 알고 있다. 

 

우리는 남이 생산한 음식을 먹고, 남이 만든 옷을 입고, 남이 지은 집에서 산다. 우리의 지식과 신념의 대부분은 남이 창조한 언어에 의해 남으로부터 우리에게 전달되어 왔다.  그러므로 우리는 짐승보다 인간이 나은 주된 우월성을 인간 사회에 산다는 사실에 기인함을 인정해야 한다.

 

 

 

 

태어나면서부터 혼자 내버려두면 개인은 우리가 상상할 수 없을 정도로 그의 사상과 감정에 있어 원시적이며 야수상태에 남아 있을 것이다. 인간이 오늘과 같은 개인이 되고 또 개인으로서 지금과 같은 의의를 갖게 된 것은 그의 개인성에 기인한다기 보다 차라리 태어나서 죽을 때까지 그의 물심양면의 생활을 이끄는 커다란 인간 사회의 일원으로서이다. 공동 사회에 대한 인간의 가치는 그의 감정, 사상, 행동이 동포의 이익을 증진하는데 얼마나 경주되었느냐에 달려 있다.
